Rome01 The Colosseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was capable of seating 45,000–50,000 spectators. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. The name Colosseum was derived from the gigantic bronze Colossus of Nero statue that used to stand outside the amphitheater.
