Rome02 To protect the spectators from the blazing sun, an enormous canvas awning called the Velarium was stretched across the Colosseum. It was held aloft by wooden poles, which rested on these bases, and was operated by a myriad of ropes and pulleys. It's estimated that it required over 1,000 sailors and slaves to operate.
