King's Gate

This was the main castle entrance and was planned with extremely complex defenses. Outside, massive towers command the approach across a drawbridge. The gate passage was to have five sets of doors, six portcullises, a right-angled turn opening off an octagonal central chamber and a final inner drawbridge to the lower ward; there were arrow loops in the wall and murder holes in the roof.

Though the provisions for all these features still exist, the rearward half of the gatehouse was probably never completed, along with several other areas planned for the castle's interior.
