One of the defense castles that Edward I built around the perimeter of Wales, Caernarfon (kah-NAR-von) is one of the best preserved and interesting.

Queen's Gate - Porth Y Frenhines

This is the second great gatehouse of the castle. It was never finished but it was clearly planned to be almost as imposing as the main King's Gate itself.

Access from outside would have been up a long ramp, then across a drawbridge, with the entrance barred by gates and portcullises. Additional defense was provided by murder holes in the vault above - two can be seen in section in the unfinished face.

On the upper level, running the full width of the gatehouse, a hall was planned but, like that over the King's Gate, it was never built.

Statue in Lower Left is of "The Right Honorable David Lloyd George OM Prime Minister MP Caernarfon Boroughs and Constable of Carnarvon Castle"
