The Maximon
Although the Guatemalans may be Catholic on the surface, old Mayan traditions and rituals still hold sway in their hearts. One of these is a roguish deity named Maximon (pronounced mah-shee-mohn) who’s represented by an idol decked out in brightly colored scarves and a Stetson hat with a penchant for hard liquor, tobacco and an occasional fling with an unwary maiden.
This is all taken very seriously and it's considered a great honor to house the Maximon which is rotated on a yearly basis.
