Light in Faces

Representing the human face is fundamental for Leonardo da Vinci. In his portraits, he puts he mastery of techniques - effects of clear, obscure, shadows, transparency, anatomical details - in the service of analytical psychology. The association of anatomy and physiognomy, which is an interpretation of the person starting from the facial features, was also used by him to evoke passion. The smile of the Mona Lisa or St John the Baptist; the expression of rage of the combatants at the battle of Anghiari (victory of the Florentines over the Milanese in 1440); the wrinkles and pensive features of an old and emaciated Saint Jerome, tell of the mastery of the painter in grasping the human soul.
