Judith with the Head of Holofernes
Oil on wood

This picture, previously attributed to the Emilian artist Girolamo da Carpi, shows the strong influence of the artistic culture of Raffaello's followers, particularly in the figure of the woman.

Judith, a young Hebrew, kills Holofernes, who is an enemy of her people. The story is narrated in the Bible (Book of Judith). The subject of Judith's deed is frequently represented, because it was interpreted as the triumph of virtue over sin.
