(Top) Emaciated prisoners upon liberation, 1945

The sight of prisoners who were nothing but skin and bone was a daily occurrence from 1940 onwards.

Dandelions

There are other things you can eat. First there are dandelions. You simply pull out the whole root, shake off the soil and stick the whole thing in your mouth. Unfortunately there are only a few of them at our work site.

Hunger

The calorie content of the food rations lay far under the daily requirement. The prisoners attempted to deaden the constantly tormenting hunger by drinking greater amounts of tap water. But neither this harmful "moor water" nor the consumption of herbs, roots, potato peels or the like, could delay the physical decay accelerated by the permanent inadequacy of the provisions.
