Burg Gutenfels was built around 1200 by the ministerial officials of Falkenstein-Münzenberg.

During the Bavarian-Palatine war of succession in 1504, the castle withstood a 39 day siege. This is how it acquired the name Gutenfels ("Good Rock").

In the late 19th century, it was converted to a hotel as the prominent signs clearly state.
