The feast of St Nicholas
Jan Steen
oil on canvas, 1665-68

For centuries the feast of St Nicholas, in early December, has been celebrated the same way. Well-behaved children get presents from the saint. The girl in the foreground has a bucket full of gifts. Naughty children -- like the boy on the left, in tears -- find a bundle of twigs in their shoe. Steen was a born storyteller. Here he has included all the elements of this national celebration.

Ferdi said that this reminds him of his childhood and celebrating the same thing with his family.
