St William's College

Dedicated to William Fitzherbert, great grandson of William the Conqueror who was Archbishop of York in 1153, the College was erected between 1465 and 1467 under Letters Patent granted by Edward IV to George Nevill, Bishop of Exeter and his brother Richard, Earl of Warwick (the Kingmaker) as the home of the chantry priests of the Cathedral.

In 1642 it was the residence of Sir Henry Jenkins and when King Charles I moved his court from London to York he set up his printing presses here.
