C. 1905 Steam Fire Engine

This horse-drawn steam fire engine, built by Shand Mason of London and named 'Arkie', was in service with Gosforth Council and Rowntrees of York. Later adapted to be pulled by a tractor, it was made ready for emergency use in 1939.

Steam pressure to operate the pump was built up on the way to a fire. The fire-box was kept constantly primed.
