Uilleann Pipes

Played by Allan Moller

The pipes you are hearing are Irish "Piob Uillean", literally "Elbow Pipes" in Welsh "Pibell Pen Elin", in Scotland the "Cauld Wind Pipes" because of the dry air supplied by the bellows.

Their exact origins are obscure, but it's generally thought that they appeared circa 1649 when Parliamentarian troops under the command of Oliver Crommwell landed in Ireland. The Highland or War Pipes "Piob Mor" were used to lead the Irish troops into battle against him so he classed them as an instrument of war and summarily hanged all pipers. (So people are still in favor of this!) The quieter and most sophisticated of all the bagpipe family, the Uilleann Pipes are thought to have been invented to allow the Irish to play their music in safety.

There is a long tradition of Irish piping in Wales, particularly in Pembrokeshire where Welsh Kings listed Irish pipes as an important part of their court.

I am playing a mixture of Celtic tunes which are available on cassette, accompanied on Celtic harp by my colleague Chris Knowles.

I gave the guy a pound and thanked him for, "being easier to take than a bagpipe" :-)
