The circular, slate dais was designed as the ceremonial centerpiece for the Investiture of the Prince of Wales on 1 July 1969. The slate was hewn and shaped locally at Dinowric quarry, Llanberis; this has since closed and its workshops are now a museum of the slate industry.



In 1284, work on the new castle at Caernarfon was proceeding rapidly. Here on 25 April, Queen Eleanor bore King Edward I a son - the future Edward II. Edward formally created him Prince of Wales on 7 February 1301, and that title has usually been granted to the male heir to the throne ever since.
