The Imperial Evangeliar or Coronation Evaneliar (Gospel)
Court of Charlemagne, just before 800

The manuscript is the most important of a small group of manuscripts that were produced at the court of Charlemagne after 794, when he had settled in Aix-la-Chapelle. At his coronation the new king swore the Oath on this Gospel. His oath fingers touched this page with the beginning of the Gospel of John on it. On the front cover God the Father sits enthroned in the center. On either side of him stand Mary and the Angel of the Annunciation. In the corners there are medallions with the symbols of the four evangelists.
