Reliquary containing Particle of the Cross

It was believed that the large chip of wood had a nail-hole soaked in Christ's blood, and it was therefore regarded as particularly sacred. In this relic of his passion Christ himself protects the rulers. It was kept in the shaft of the Imperial Cross, until Charles IV had the gold setting made in the shape of a processional cross, whose side arms are painted black.
