Angus Og
The year is ... 1300

Viking domination of the Highlands and Hebrides finally ended in the 13th century. Much of the land the Vikings had controlled in the West of Scotland passed to Clan Donald. In 1354 their leader assumed the title 'Lords of the Isles' and for nearly 200 years the mighty MacDonald Lords ruled, more or less, as independent kings in Western Scotland.

Angus Og was the first of the Clan Donald to be given the area of Lochaber. This land, including Glencoe, originally belonged to the MacDougalls. But in 1309 Angus Og fought on the side of Robert the Bruce at the Pass of Brander helping to defeat the king's sworn enemy, the MacDougall Lords of Lorn. As reward, the king divided the MacDougall lands amongst his supporters and allies.

Angus Og's son, Iain Fraoch, meaning 'John of the Heather', was the forefather of the MacDonalds of Glencoe. Sometime after 1314 he received the lands of Glencoe from his father, and founded the branch of the MacDonalds known also as Clan Iain Abrach.
