Ceremonial Dirk
England, Middle Bronze Age
1500-1300 BC
Found at Oxborough, Norfolk

During the Bronze Age large quantities of bronze objects could be accumulated as a form of wealth.

This dirk was found set vertically in peat in a small stream valley. There are only four close parallels, found in Holland, eastern France and Brittany. Such objects imply a level of power. They show possession of metal beyond everyday requirements -- metal that could be dedicated to a ceremonial role and sacrificed to a ritual end.
