South Side of Nave

The collapse of the vault in 1768 destroyed much of the Nave, but sufficient survives on the South side to indicate its original appearance. As was usual, it was divided into three horizontal stages: an arcade opening into the flanking aisles, a triforium corresponding to the aisle roof, and a clerestoru of windows opening into the central part of the nave. The last of these was almost entirely obliterated when the vault fell, but there is enough remaining to show that the mason who designed the nave looked to English buildings, such as Lincoln Cathedral, for inspiration.
