Memorial to Wallace

Erected by the Corporation of Edinburgh under Captain Hugh Reid's bequest
Unveiled 28th May 1929
The Rt. Hon. Sir Alexander Stevenson Lord Provost

The patriot, knight and protector of Scotland, made famous in Mel Gibson's 'Braveheart' film. Although the movie took 'great creative license' with the historical facts, it did bring this Hero of Scotland to an international stage.

To the Immortal memory of Sir William Wallace

Scottish patriot born at Edlderslie Renfrewshire circa 1270 A.D. Who, from the year 1296, fought dauntlessly in defense of his country's liberty and independence in the face of fearful odds and great hardship being eventually betrayed and captured, brought to London and put to death on 23rd August 1305.

His example heroism and devotion inspired those who came after him to win victory from defeat and his memory remains for all time a source of pride, honor and inspiration to his countrymen.

"Dico tibi verum, libertas optima rerum; nunquam servili sub nexu vivito, fili"
I tell thee truly, no gift is like liberty; then never live in slavery, my son.
