The Temple Pediment

The central carving in the 'Gorgon's Head', encircled by wreaths of leaves and supported by winged victories. This staring face combines many ideas. The gorgon, a symbol of Minerva, resembles other Roman water-gods like Oceanus and Neptune. Its sun-like appearance may refer to the heat of the Sacred Spring.

The owl and helmet symbolize Minerva's responsibility for wisdom and war.
