After the discovery and excavation of the main swimming bath in the 1880s the terrace on which you stand and the concert room, now the museum reception hall, were built. The statues on this terrace were carved in 1894.



The Roman Baths lie about fifteen feet below present street level and the remains of other Roman buildings extend beneath the City in all directions. The 16th century Abbey stands on the site of earlier cathedrals and may also overlie a pagan Roman temple.
